We both were nervous, and that was the moment I knew exactly where God wanted us both to be.
I started mentoring earlier this year! To be honest I was nervous about what I was doing, yet excited to be able to help a young girl as a positive influence. When Marcus called me with a match, I had butterflies in my stomach and was nervous to meet her and the family. I just didn’t know what to expect even though they tell you!
I showed up to the house and met with my mentee and her family and was able to get to know her a little and then offered to take her to grab an appetizer. She opened up and we had great conversation about life. Nothing in particular, just discussed that life in general can be difficult and we all go through tough stuff. At the end of the conversation, she said “I am so glad you are my mentor, I was scared” I said “me too!” We both were nervous, and that was the moment I knew exactly where God wanted us both to be.
She has met my kids since then and we have gone out to movies, and just spent time together! We talk about college and goals and boys. My kids ask about her, and want to hang out with more. We went to church last Sunday and what I encourage you to know if you are considering this. It’s not a time commitment at all, God will help you with your schedule, and making time for an amazing young person. Just take something you would be doing anyway and bring them with you, spend genuine time. Ask questions and show them what a caring adult is like!
I love that she is comfortable enough that she calls me when she needs to talk! While she has had an extremely rough couple years, we are open and honest with each other about things and how to handle tough stuff.
We are glad to have Jamie on our mentoring team! If you’re interested in learning more about what support our mentors receive, or would like to attend training to become a mentor, contact us!
