On November 11, 2018, ministries, churches, and people around the world will recognize and celebrate “Orphan Sunday.” This day is set apart for the Body of Christ to rejoice in God’s redemptive plan and adoption of us. Orphan Sunday serves as a reminder of this truth as well as an invitation to respond in tangible and prayerful ways to care for the parent-less child. We are encouraged to seek God’s heart for our place in adoption, foster care, and global orphan care.
The first Orphan Sunday was celebrated in the U.S. in 2003. Unified efforts spread and in 2009, many churches and organizations collectively and purposefully shared a single goal- May God’s deep love for the orphan infuse into our lives as well!
While each event is locally led, we have the privilege of standing up (literally and prayerfully) with others around our community and around the globe to reflect on God’s deep love for the parentless child…and for each of us as well! Please join us for seven days of prayer leading up to Orphan Sunday on November 11.
A prayer for hearts to be moved
He has shown you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:8
Prayer: Lord, break my heart for what breaks Yours and give me a personal sense of responsibility to pray regularly for orphans, vulnerable children, families in crisis, and my community.
God sets the lonely in families. Psalm 68:6a
Prayer: Thank you God for adoptive families, foster families, biological families, and my family. Please continue to give your wisdom, mercy, and hope as we seek You.
The King will reply, “I tell you the truth, whatever you did for the least of these brothers of mine, you did for Me.” Matthew 25:40
Prayer: Lord please raise up more volunteers who will serve foster, biological, and adoptive families well, using their gifts and talents to show vulnerable children the unmatched love of Jesus.
And anyone who welcomes a little child like this on my behalf is welcoming me. Matthew 18:5
Prayer: Dear God, we ask You to provide more loving, Christian foster homes in Omaha and surrounding areas to care for the most vulnerable in our community.
Give justice to the weak and fatherless; maintain the right of the afflicted and destitute. Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked. Psalm 82: 2-3
Prayer: Lord pour out Your mercy and blessing on families in crisis. Heal their emotional wounds and protect their children from harm. Lead them to the resources their family needs for healing.
For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Ephesians 6:12
Prayer: Father in Heaven, may Your light shine in the darkness.
Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world. James 1:27
Prayer: Lord, we pray that You would be glorified by your Church taking her rightful place in caring for orphans and vulnerable children. Open the eyes of church leaders to champion these children and families.
